Vampires
exist among us. They can be our neighbor, best friend, our child’s
teacher …
They alter their aged appearance based upon the amount of blood they consume. They move to a new area, drink a lot of blood, and appear young. Slowly they limit their intake of blood and age, right in front of our unsuspecting eyes. After decades, they fake their death, move, and do it over and over again.
Most live quiet lives in an effort to blend in.
Some however want power and control.
The Colony is an elite group of vampires sworn to protect the President of the United States from these rogue vampires.
Sterling, a half-breed vampire who works with a covert team of vampires to protect the President of the United States, is the weakest link in the chain for his team, and he knows it. Because he was born to a human mother, he has no standing in the vampire world, and really has no place in the human world either.
He has a unique ability to glean information from inanimate objects, and his life is kind of like CSI meets the West Wing, where key positions are held by vampires. Vampires can alter their age based on the amount of blood they consume, which should allow Sterling to blend into human society, however his ability has painful side effects that cause him to live a lonely life down in the evidence room at FBI headquarters. He's a lonely bad-boy looking for love in all the wrong places.
His current case involves the kidnapping of vampire children by a religious cult who is trying to save them. Sterling teams up with a pure-bred vampire, Kate, who is the nanny of one of the kids. Would Kate ever consider a relationship with a half-breed who is constantly in pain?
Kate has led a sheltered life and is considered handicapped by vampire standards. She creates a symbiotic relationship with Sterling, who helps her to discover that she is able to have a normal life, with all the joys and sorrows that it brings.
Together, can they save the kidnapped children and find true love for themselves?

My
review:
In
Eternal Service, the focus of the story was Raymond with some mention
of the secondary characters, Sterling, Ben, William, Sulie, Dixon,
and the villain. United Service is Sterling's story. Sterling is a
half-breed and his special power allows him to get information from
inanimate objects. But after touching the items, it leaves Sterling
in pain. How he manages to deal with the every day constant pain he
lives in. There are only two things that help him diminish or lessen
the pain, a woman's touch or rain. To help with the debilitating
headaches, sex is the way he can get relief. Sterling hasn't let
himself form any feelings with any of the women he's had sex with,
none of them has stirred his heart.
Kate
Spencer is a full blood vampire with her own set of problems caused
by her special power. She's young, beautiful and a little naive.
When
Sterling passes Kate in the corridor of the FBI headquarters, his
heart does a pit-a-pat and he gets aroused. Something that no other
woman has been able to do.
The
two unlikely partners work together to find those who are responsible
for kidnapping vampire children and murdering their parents. They
seem to start off on the wrong foot, with Sterling seeming to always
say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Those scenes were quite funny
and I so enjoyed them.
I'm
really not sure how Sterling is able to live in constant pain, but
he's willing to do that so he catch the scum bags who do the worst
crimes. His father is always on Sterling's case about finding a mate
and thinks the worse about his son. I really felt bad for Sterling
that his father never gave him the benefit of the doubt, never asking
questions just assuming the worst.
United
Service is full of action, suspense, romance, love and self
discovery. It was so awesome to see where the author took these
characters throughout the book. The story moved along at a nice pace,
was well written and has some great surprises along the way. I am
really loving this series and can't wait to get my hands on book 3,
Enduring Service.
